STATE ACTORS: European Parliament web platform sustains DDoS attack

STATE ACTORS: European Parliament web platform sustains DDoS attack
By Iain Fraser - Cybersecurity Journalist, Gibraltar

AFP has reported that the European Parliament website has been hit by a cyberattack claimed by pro-Russian hackers shortly after legislators approved a resolution labelling Moscow a "state sponsor of terrorism".

The parliament's president, Roberta Metsola, took to Twitter to post "The European Parliament is under a sophisticated cyberattack. A pro-Kremlin group has claimed responsibility" he went on "Our IT experts are pushing back against it and protecting our systems. This, after we proclaimed Russia as a State-sponsor of terrorism"

Sources say that there are credible reports that the pro-Russian hacking group Killnet has claimed responsibility for the attack.

It is believed that the parliament platform has been the target of a highly sophisticated "DDoS" attack disrupting the normal functionality by flooding the platform with huge volumes of bogus spam traffic. A source at the parliament, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the attack was the "most sophisticated in recent history" to target the institution.

Killnet has in the past claimed attacks on US government websites and said it has taken action against other countries opposed to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Learn More /...
